Zelensky outlines three security guarantee options for Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is considering three main options for security guarantees to prevent a repeat Russian invasion, as announced at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday, October 22. The three options are NATO membership, direct US security guarantees modeled on Article 5 of the Alliance, and support from European partners and the Coalition of the Willing. Zelensky noted these mechanisms could complement each other, emphasizing the need for a strong Ukrainian army with adequate funding. Zelensky stressed that US guarantees must be detailed and backed by Congress, recalling the Budapest Memorandum's failure to protect Ukraine's sovereignty. This comes amid recent negotiations with Russia, including a Witkoff-Putin meeting in St. Petersburg and plans for trilateral talks in November.
