Trump Touts Release of US Teacher From Russia to Justify Sanctions Relief
President Trump on Wednesday touted the release of former U.S. teacher Stephen Hubbard from Russian detention as a personal achievement, using it to justify recent sanctions relief on Russian diesel and the decision to hold off on new penalties. Trump stated that easing sanctions was essential for the success of the release negotiations, which he credited to his own diplomatic efforts. He also criticized former President Biden and Democrats on social media, asserting that Hubbard should have been freed long ago, as he seeks to showcase his foreign policy skills ahead of the midterm elections. The State Department confirmed to Kyodo News that Hubbard's release resulted from diplomatic efforts by Trump and envoy Steve Witkoff, adding that no concessions were given to Russia. Trump also reportedly lashed out at a reporter during the announcement.
