Russian Diesel Tanker Heads to New York After US Lifts Sanctions
A Malta-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 tons of Russian diesel is en route to New York, according to LSEG data, following a diesel deal announced by US President Donald Trump with Russia's Vladimir Putin. The US Treasury temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian diesel deliveries as part of the agreement. Under the deal, Russia will immediately supply 300,000 tons of diesel to the US and world markets, with 500,000 tons to follow in November and an additional 1 million tons shortly after. Ukraine and European allies have criticized the agreement, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calling it "a gift" to Putin, while European sanctions remain in place. Trump has stated the diesel is not intended for the US market but for global markets facing high prices. However, experts note the shipments will likely have minimal price impact, as the 40,000 tons currently en route equals only about two hours of US daily consumption of roughly 500,000 tons.
