Ukraine's power outages persist as strikes cripple energy grid before winter
Prolonged power outages in Ukraine before winter are caused by destruction of energy facilities, strikes on transmission networks, and repairs requiring equipment shutdowns, according to MP Serhiy Kozyr. Resilience plans were not a panacea. Kozyr stated many energy objects were destroyed last year, requiring significant funds, time, and spare parts for restoration. Russia has focused attacks on substations transmitting electricity from nuclear plants, including five 330 kV substations around Kyiv, while drones also target lines and poles. The energy ring around Kyiv is damaged but not fully destroyed, with repairs requiring network disconnections and pauses due to repeated strikes. Electricity is prioritized for critical facilities, and the MP warned the situation may worsen as winter has not yet begun.
