Trump floats major Ukraine deal, Kremlin cools expectations

mdr.de (German) —

US President Donald Trump has announced a "very large" agreement regarding Ukraine that could affect "all of Europe," but the Kremlin has dampened expectations for such a deal. Russia is sending a high-level delegation including Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov to trilateral talks with the US and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi next week, the first such meetings since February. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said European nations have shown no readiness to discuss a future security system. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Germany cannot deliver further Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine without creating unacceptable gaps in its own military. He expressed skepticism about the upcoming peace talks, saying an agreement between Washington and Moscow over the heads of Ukraine and Europe would be unacceptable.
