Europe Warns of Rising Russian Hybrid Attacks, No Imminent NATO Threat

European ministers warned that Russia is intensifying sabotage, cyberattacks, and other hybrid operations across Europe to undermine support for Ukraine, while dismissing the likelihood of a direct NATO assault. The warnings came during the UN General Assembly this week. Officials from NATO's eastern flank cited drone incursions, arson, explosions, and airspace violations as evidence of Moscow's covert campaign. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for tougher sanctions, while Poland and Romania reported frequent incursions, including a Russian helicopter violating Polish airspace. Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said Russia lacks the capability for active military aggression against NATO, arguing the campaign aims to create fear and divide Western societies. Ministers urged unity and continued support for Ukraine, warning Russia may weaponize winter by targeting energy infrastructure.
