Macron pitches Trump on oil, Ukraine initiatives at UN meeting
Emmanuel Macron proposed several initiatives to Donald Trump during a UN General Assembly meeting in New York, including a UN resolution to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and protect Saudi oil sites, aiming to curb rising oil prices. The French president described the discussion as "very constructive." Proposals included securing maritime traffic in the strait, through which 20% of global hydrocarbon trade passes, and a "strictly defensive" approach to protecting Saudi energy infrastructure from Houthi attacks. Macron also discussed accelerating support for Ukraine with interceptor missiles and potential moratoriums on energy strikes. The meeting lasted about half an hour, with France seeking to maintain US pressure on Russia and involvement in European security negotiations.
