Trump vows 'unmatched military might' in anti-cartel campaign

President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to reassert US dominance in the Western Hemisphere and use "unmatched military might" against regional threats, rallying allies behind an expanded anti-cartel campaign at the UN General Assembly. Trump labeled drug cartels "the ISIS of the Western Hemisphere" and urged tougher responses to transnational crime. He cited the US raid capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and an oil deal as proof of US willingness to act, ahead of a meeting with the Shield of the Americas coalition. The coalition, launched in March, includes Argentina, Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia, and Peru, but not Brazil or Mexico. Trump has designated cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and conducted deadly strikes on drug boats, which rights groups call extrajudicial killings.
