Macron and Trump agree to push for moratorium on Ukraine infrastructure strikes

French President Emmanuel Macron discussed with US President Donald Trump initiatives to introduce a moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure during Russia's war against Ukraine, Macron announced on X on Monday, September 21. Macron stated the two leaders agreed to combine efforts to achieve a moratorium on strikes against Ukraine's energy and civilian infrastructure, emphasizing that civilians must be protected and serious peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine should begin as soon as possible. After the meeting, Macron told journalists they also agreed on the need to help Ukraine strengthen its defenses, including supplying Kyiv with additional interceptor missiles against Russian air attacks. The meeting occurred ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York (September 22-26), where nearly 130 world leaders will gather. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also met Macron that evening and is expected to meet Trump on September 22. Earlier, Zelensky thanked US lawmakers for passing the late Senator Lindsey Graham's "hellish sanctions" law against Russia.
