US-mediated aid operation completes in occupied Ukrainian city of Oleschky

sueddeutsche.de (German) —

A US-mediated humanitarian aid operation for the Russian-occupied Ukrainian frontline city of Oleschky has been completed, marking the largest such effort since the war began in February 2022. The operation, conducted under a local ceasefire, allowed for the delivery of aid and the evacuation of residents. Dozens of tons of food, hygiene supplies, and fuel were delivered, while 25 buses with over 750 seats and nine ambulances helped evacuate residents. Ukrainian and Russian human rights officials jointly oversaw the operation, with most evacuees choosing to leave for Ukrainian-controlled territory. The ceasefire is set to last through Sunday. Oleschky, which had about 24,000 residents before the war, is now home to only a fraction of that number. The city has been a frontline area since November 2022. The ceasefire was mediated by US First Lady Melania Trump and supported by Pope Leo XIV, with hostilities expected to resume after it ends.
