Evacuated residents from Oleschky return to Ukraine via Chernihiv

orf.at (German) —

Evacuated residents from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian frontline city of Oleschky have crossed back into Ukraine, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They entered via the Chernihiv region, which borders Belarus, on Saturday. The rescued group had previously passed through Belarus with a delegation led by Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinez. Zelenskyy thanked the US and First Lady Melania Trump for brokering the ceasefire, which was also mediated by Pope Leo XIV. The number of evacuees was not disclosed. The evacuees were given a choice to leave or stay in the devastated city, which has suffered catastrophic conditions since Russian forces captured it in 2022. The ceasefire in the Kherson region ends Sunday evening. Meanwhile, fighting continues elsewhere, including a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia's Bryansk region.
