Evacuated Oleshky residents arrive in Belarus after ceasefire
Residents evacuated from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky have arrived in Belarus and are expected to return to Ukraine on Saturday, following a ceasefire brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump. The evacuees, trapped without food, water, or electricity, left the devastated frontline city on Friday during a four-hour window. Planes carrying them landed in Gomel, Belarus, with a bus convoy heading toward the Ukrainian border, according to officials. The humanitarian ceasefire in the Kherson region began Tuesday, allowing the road out of Oleshky to be cleared of mines. Several hundred residents chose to stay, while Ukraine's human rights ombudsman visited the city, marking the first Ukrainian official trip to occupied territory since the war began.
