Evacuee from occupied Oleshky describes quiet anthem singing and journey to Ukraine

nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Ukraine's human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets released a video of evacuees from occupied Oleshky, Kherson region, with one woman describing local sentiment and the journey to Ukrainian-controlled territory. The woman said residents had hoped for liberation rather than evacuation, as the town is Ukrainian territory. She recounted that people on the bus sang the national anthem quietly, explaining they had grown accustomed to silence under occupation, but stressed they had not forgotten the anthem. The evacuation began October 30 after demining routes, with 25 buses for 750 people. Evacuees traveled through Russia's Anapa and Belarus before reaching Ukraine, while some residents chose to relocate to Russia or remain. Lubinets reported no shelling during the 87-hour ceasefire extended across Kherson region, which lasts until November 1.
