Ukraine and Russia agree on Oleschky aid corridor, but Kyiv warns of possible Russian deception
Aid deliveries to the besieged Ukrainian city of Oleschky are set to begin Friday following a ceasefire, but Ukrainian officials warn Russia may be planning a deception operation. Demining efforts are underway to secure a safe transport corridor. The truce, brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump and supported by Pope Leo XIV, is a prerequisite for evacuating the city's remaining 1,700 to 2,000 residents and delivering essential food and medicine. Both Ukrainian and Russian human rights ombudsmen confirmed the ceasefire is currently holding. Critics warn the pause gives Russia time to reposition troops, and the evacuation route via Belarus has raised concerns. The city, occupied since 2022, has been used by Russia as a launchpad for attacks on nearby Cherson.
