Evacuees from Russian-occupied Oleshky reach Ukraine under truce
Evacuees from Russian-occupied Oleshky crossed into Ukraine on Saturday as part of a major rescue operation under the most significant truce since Russia's full-scale invasion, brokered with help from US first lady Melania Trump. The ceasefire in Ukraine's southern Kherson region began Tuesday and is expected to last until Sunday evening. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy thanked the US for mediation, saying "when the world pays attention, people are rescued." Evacuees travelled via Crimea, Belarus, and a border crossing, with an estimated 2,000 residents offered choices of destination or remaining. Relatives waited at the Ukrainian-Belarusian border with aid tents and supplies, while volunteers from the Red Cross and other groups assisted. Russia reported shooting down 433 Ukrainian drones overnight, and Zelenskiy said Moscow launched attacks on energy infrastructure, leaving 280,000 households without power.
