Evacuation from occupied Oleshky masks Russian bombardments on Dnipro
A temporary ceasefire in southern Ukraine, attributed to US First Lady Melania Trump, has enabled the evacuation of civilians from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky, while Russia continues heavy bombardments elsewhere, including Dnipro. The truce, running from October 27 to November 1, allowed a convoy of 25 buses and nine ambulances to evacuate residents from the frontline town, which has been cut off from food supplies since May. Ukrainian and Russian ombudsmen jointly oversaw the operation, with evacuees offered a choice of destination. Critics note Russia is using the humanitarian act to distract from attacks that killed 15 people in Dnipro the day before the ceasefire began. The operation follows months of failed Ukrainian attempts to secure safe passage for the town's remaining 1,500 residents.
