Evacuated Residents of Olesjky Reach Crimea After Ceasefire

nos.nl (Dutch) —

A convoy evacuating residents from the Ukrainian frontline city of Olesjky has arrived in Russia-occupied Crimea following a temporary ceasefire, allowing hundreds of civilians to flee the besieged area. The evacuation was made possible by a rare truce brokered by Pope Leo and US First Lady Melania Trump. Around 750 of the estimated 2,000 remaining residents were offered transport, with buses delivering food, medicine, and fuel for those who chose to stay behind. Two people died during the operation, including a Russian sapper. Evacuees can remain in Russia, fly to Belarus, or travel onward to northern Ukraine, though some residents expressed distrust of the route and refused to leave their homeland.
