Macron calls Trump talks on Ukraine and Red Sea positive

French President Emmanuel Macron said he held positive talks with US President Donald Trump regarding the conflicts in Ukraine and the Red Sea. Macron spoke after their meeting in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Macron stated the discussions covered the Red Sea situation's importance for global prices and included a lengthy exchange on Ukraine and Russia, which he described as "very good" and "constructive." He urged Trump to provide Kyiv with air defense systems, calling it a defensive measure, and noted Trump was very open to the discussion. Macron arrived in New York from the French archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon, where he met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney has been in a sharp dispute with Trump over stalled US-Canada trade negotiations, leading to reciprocal tariffs. Macron is also scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
