Ukraine's energy crisis: Kyiv faces daily blackouts as Russia targets power grid
Ukraine's energy sector faces persistent blackout schedules as Russia aims to destabilize Kyiv, according to Oleksiy Kucherenko, deputy head of parliament's energy committee. He stated that both Russian attacks and insufficient air defense have contributed to the crisis. Kucherenko noted that energy workers now plan only one day ahead due to constant strikes on generation facilities and substations around Kyiv. He said Kyiv can produce only 10-15% of its electricity needs, with critical infrastructure prioritized over residential supply. The official warned that Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Odesa will face severe winter challenges, while Kyiv's metro lacks sufficient backup power. He described two hours of daily electricity for residents as a realistic scenario, though exact schedules remain unpredictable.
