Russian missile strikes kill 29 in Zaporizhzhia settlement

aftenposten.no (Swedish) —

Russian missile strikes on the settlement of Komyshuvakha in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region on Monday killed 29 people, according to Ukraine's state emergency service, with two rescue workers among the dead. The attack targeted a school used for humanitarian aid distribution, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, calling it "exceptionally cruel." He stated Russia used a double-tap strike, with nine additional bombs hitting a shelter where people, including rescuers, had gathered after the first attack. Regional official Mykhailo Semikin said each bomb weighed three tons, and BBC reported 48 people remain missing. Zelenskyy said Russia could not have been unaware civilians received aid there weekly, arguing the attack proves Moscow does not want de-escalation and demanding a strong global response. Russia frequently uses guided glide bombs, which can travel tens of kilometers, allowing aircraft to strike from beyond Ukrainian air defense range.
