A Russian airstrike on a school in the village of Komyshuvakha in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region killed 26 people on Monday, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack occurred one day after a six-day local ceasefire, negotiated by U.S. first lady Melania Trump, ended. Two rescue team members were among the dead, and 27 people were reported missing. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces initially dropped aerial bombs on the school, which was used for humanitarian aid distribution, then struck again with nine more bombs, hitting a shelter where people had gathered. The village is southeast of the regional capital, also named Zaporizhzhia. Police and rescue teams were working to reach residents believed trapped under the rubble, with photos showing smoking debris across the area.
