Kyiv faces near-total power generation loss as Russia strikes five key substations around the clock

nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Kyiv has almost no electricity generation of its own, while Russia attacks the capital's five key power line substations around the clock, according to energy expert Volodymyr Omelchenko. Omelchenko said Kyiv's distributed generation projects provide only 70 MW against a winter demand of 1800 MW, leaving the city fully dependent on external power supply from the unified energy system, mainly nuclear plants. The expert stressed that protecting these substations with air defense and repair crews is critical, noting that work on shielding 110 kV substations in the Kyiv region has tripled in recent weeks.
