Russian airstrike kills 33 at Ukrainian school shelter in Zaporizhzhia
A Russian airstrike with nine bombs killed at least 33 people at a school building in southeastern Ukraine, where civilians had taken shelter, with 50 others still missing. The building in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region, served as a shelter and humanitarian aid distribution center, according to regional governor Mykhailo Semikin. Victims were in a reinforced basement funded by the European Union, but the bombs collapsed the concrete structure and sparked a fire. The shelter was built last year to maintain schooling during the war, but was repurposed as an administrative and aid hub as fighting neared. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack "absolutely horrifying." At least two rescuers and four police officers were also killed in a follow-up strike, a tactic Russia has used previously.
