Kyiv's mayor warns of 'extremely difficult' electricity situation after Russian strikes
Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko said Tuesday the electricity situation in the Ukrainian capital is "extremely difficult" following Russian strikes on the country's energy sector. Klitschko reported damage to both electricity production and transport nationwide, causing water supply issues and public transport problems. Private operator DTEK confirmed "serious destruction" in the Dnipropetrovsk region and damage near Odesa, with emergency blackouts implemented in Kyiv. Ukraine fears a repeat of winter 2025, when Russian strikes devastated power plants and left millions without electricity in freezing temperatures. Energy Minister Denys Chmyhal accused Moscow of targeting a substation vital to the Khmelnytskyi nuclear plant, calling it a "grave escalation." Ukraine has also struck Russian oil refineries and energy facilities.
