FBI Links Record $6B Binance Crypto Theft to North Korean Hackers
The FBI has officially attributed the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, the October 29 hack of Binance, to North Korea. The attack, which resulted in losses exceeding $6 billion, is linked to the state-sponsored hacking group TraderTraitor. The FBI stated that the hackers are converting stolen funds primarily into Ethereum and plan to launder them through decentralized finance services and exchanges. The bureau has published the hackers' wallet addresses and urged crypto services to block transactions with them. Binance reported the breach on October 29, losing approximately $6.3 billion, and temporarily suspended withdrawals while promising to compensate losses. About $3 billion of the stolen assets have been frozen, and former CEO Changpeng Zhao said the company holds a stake in SpaceX worth over $1 billion to cover potential shortfalls.
