FBI says North Korea stole $6 billion from Binance in largest crypto hack
The FBI has accused North Korea of stealing over $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance on October 29, calling it the largest crypto theft in history and attributing the attack to a hacking operation known as TraderTraitor. Working with the US Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, the FBI observed hackers converting stolen assets primarily into Ethereum, with blockchain firm TRM Labs estimating $6.36 billion was moved across 10 networks in about 20 minutes. The agencies warned funds would likely be laundered through DeFi platforms and instant exchange services. The FBI urged exchanges, THORNode operators, and DeFi services to block transactions from identified wallet addresses. Binance said it replenished about 90% of stolen funds, set aside $6.34 billion to cover losses, and suspended withdrawals while working to restore service.
