FBI Links Binance Hack to North Korean Group TraderTraitor

faz.net (German) —

The FBI has attributed the multi-billion-dollar hack of cryptocurrency exchange Binance to North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor. Binance has pledged to fully cover customer losses from the attack. The FBI announced the attribution on Saturday and urged companies to block transactions from specific addresses to prevent the group from laundering stolen assets. Binance disclosed the attack on Thursday, stating assets worth $6.3 billion were affected, with the breach possibly occurring via an IT employee's laptop. Binance said it has already secured replacements for 90 percent of stolen crypto using corporate funds, with the remaining ten percent requiring more time. Withdrawals are expected to resume Sunday. TraderTraitor is linked to the Lazarus Group, also blamed for a $1.5 billion Bybit hack in early 2025.
