FBI confirms North Korea behind $6 billion Binance crypto heist
The FBI has confirmed that North Korea was responsible for stealing over $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, the world's largest exchange, in what is being called the largest digital asset heist in history. Binance has restored withdrawals after suspending them following the attack on October 29, 2026. The FBI attributed the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean-linked group also accused of a $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in February 2025. Binance has allocated over $6.34 billion from company funds to cover losses and repurchased 90 percent of stolen tokens, with the remainder being less liquid. President Donald Trump questioned North Korea's involvement, saying "We don't know if it's North Korea." The attack caused sharp drops in major cryptocurrency prices, including Bitcoin falling nearly five percent. TraderTraitor is believed to be part of the Lazarus Group, known for the 2014 Sony Pictures hack.
