Binance resumes withdrawals after recovering 95% of $6.3B stolen in crypto heist
Binance resumed gradual withdrawals on Sunday after recovering 95% of the $6.3 billion stolen in the largest crypto heist in history, which the FBI attributed to a North Korean-linked hacking unit. The first phase included major tokens like bitcoin and ether. The exchange covered the losses from its own resources and a $1 billion user protection fund, stating user funds remain safe. The remaining 5% of stolen assets are less liquid and will take longer to replace. Withdrawals had been suspended for security checks. The FBI identified the state-sponsored unit TraderTraitor as responsible, noting members were seen converting assets into ether. The attackers compromised Binance's transaction authorization infrastructure, draining wallets in about 20 minutes, though stablecoin issuers froze roughly half the stolen funds.
