Binance warns of scammers after $6.3bn North Korean-linked hack

independent.co.uk —

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao warned that scammers are exploiting user panic after a record-breaking $6.3bn cyber attack on the cryptocurrency exchange, with criminals impersonating Binance representatives through fake compensation offers and security alerts. The world's largest crypto exchange temporarily suspended withdrawals following last Thursday's attack, leading to $4.6bn in outflows when services resumed on Sunday. Binance stated it has already covered 95 per cent of stolen customer assets using its corporate reserves. The FBI attributed the breach to TraderTraitor, a state-sponsored North Korean hacking unit, and warned that laundering of the stolen funds is ongoing.
