FBI links North Korea to record $6.3bn Binance crypto heist

aljazeera.com —

The FBI has linked North Korea to the theft of a record $6.3bn in virtual assets from cryptocurrency exchange Binance, with malicious actors laundering the stolen funds primarily into Ethereum. The US agency blamed the operation on a group called TraderTraitor, the same group accused of a $1.5bn theft from Bybit in February last year, and called on virtual asset service providers to block transactions using suspected digital addresses. Binance said it has replaced 90 percent of the stolen amount using company funds, with the remaining 10 percent in less liquid tokens to be bought back until fully covered. The exchange halted withdrawals after the breach but planned to reopen them on Sunday.
