Binance restores withdrawals after record $6.3 billion hack blamed on North Korea
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has reinstated customer withdrawals after a record $6.3 billion hack that the FBI attributes to North Korea. The platform had suspended withdrawals on Thursday to stem the outflow following the massive digital theft. Binance began restoring withdrawals in stages at 06:00 GMT on November 1, 2026, according to a statement on its official X account. Between 06:00 and 15:30 GMT, the company processed $4.649 billion in withdrawals and $1.01 billion in deposits, resulting in a net outflow of approximately $3.64 billion, which it said represents 2.1% of its $171 billion in assets under management. The FBI identified the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor as responsible and published about 500 Ethereum addresses being used to launder the stolen assets. President Donald Trump expressed doubt about Pyongyang's involvement, while the theft is four times larger than TraderTraitor's previous record $1.5 billion heist on ByBit in February 2025. Binance, which claims 335 million users, has promised clients will not be harmed and has purchased cryptocurrencies to cover the losses.
