Binance to resume withdrawals after covering most of $6.3 billion theft
Binance will resume withdrawals on Sunday after covering 95% of the $6.3 billion in tokens stolen in the world's largest digital heist, which the FBI has linked to North Korea. The exchange used company funds to buy replacement tokens for $6 billion of the stolen assets. The first phase of withdrawals will begin between 0600 and 0900 GMT, covering 15 cryptoassets including bitcoin, ether, XRP, and dogecoin. The remaining 5% of stolen tokens are less liquid and may take longer to source. The FBI attributed the attack to the North Korean state-sponsored unit TraderTraitor, which it observed converting stolen assets into ether. Binance has set aside $6.34 billion in company funds to cover losses, drawing from its Secure Asset Fund for Users, Futures Insurance Fund, and corporate treasury. The theft unfolded in about 20 minutes late Thursday, and analysts say it could be the largest financial heist ever. President Trump said the US is not certain North Korea was involved.
