FBI links $6.3bn Binance theft to North Korean hackers
The FBI has attributed the $6.3bn Binance cryptocurrency theft, the largest financial heist in history, to North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor. The agency announced the finding on Sunday, marking a major escalation in the investigation. Investigators said the hackers are converting stolen assets primarily into ethereum and attempting to launder funds using instant swap services. Binance co-chief executive Richard Teng described the breach as a complex attack involving a compromised laptop, evidence-deleting malware and manipulated approval controls. Binance has assured users that all customer losses will be fully reimbursed using company funds and reserves, with trading due to resume within days. Cryptocurrency markets fell following the news, with bitcoin dropping to a six-week low and shares in major crypto-related firms sliding.
