Binance resumes withdrawals after $6.3B hack, replaces 95% of stolen tokens

firstpost.com —

Binance has resumed Bitcoin, Ether, and some stablecoin withdrawals after covering 95% of the $6.3 billion in tokens stolen in a hack the FBI attributes to a North Korean state-sponsored group. The exchange said other withdrawals will follow in phases. The FBI linked the attack to a North Korean unit known as TraderTraitor, which converted stolen assets into Ether. Binance used its $1 billion Secure Asset Fund for Users, Futures Insurance Fund, and corporate treasury to replace tokens, and worked with partners to freeze about $3 billion. Analysts believe the heist could be the largest financial robbery ever, surpassing last year's $2.9 billion in crypto stolen across nearly 150 attacks. The hackers used novel laundering techniques, and about $2.4 billion in crypto has moved beyond issuers' reach.
