FBI Links Record $6 Billion Binance Crypto Theft to North Korea

unian.ua (Ukrainian) —

The FBI has officially attributed the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, totaling over $6 billion from Binance, to North Korea. The attack on October 29 is linked to the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor. The FBI reports that the attackers are already converting the stolen funds primarily into Ethereum, planning to launder them through decentralized finance services and exchanges. The bureau has published a list of hacker accounts and crypto services that are not blocking transactions from these addresses. Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals after the hack but stated it would cover losses, with about $3 billion of stolen assets frozen. Former CEO Changpeng Zhao acknowledged the incident resembled a hack and mentioned the company holds a SpaceX stake worth over $1 billion that could be used to cover damages.
