FBI links Binance hack to North Korean hackers in record $1.5B theft
The FBI attributed the theft of billions of dollars from Binance, the largest crypto heist in history, to North Korean hackers on Saturday, identifying the attackers as an entity known as TraderTraitor. The bureau linked the attack to the same actors behind a $1.5 billion Bybit hack last year and asked crypto exchanges and analytics firms to block transactions tied to specific addresses. Investigators found TraderTraitor is converting stolen assets primarily into ethereum and may use DeFi services to launder funds. President Donald Trump said Saturday that investigators are not yet certain North Korea was involved, though he acknowledged it could be determined later. Binance said it has reserved funds to cover 90% of the missing assets and will fully reimburse customers.
