Binance resumes withdrawals after record $6.3bn crypto heist
Binance has resumed customer withdrawals after hackers stole approximately $6.3bn in cryptocurrency, a record theft the FBI has attributed to North Korea. The exchange suspended services Thursday following the attack and began restoring operations Sunday. Binance said it replaced about 95 percent of affected assets and will absorb the financial impact, not users. Withdrawals are reopening in stages for major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether, with delays possible due to high demand. The FBI identified the operation as TraderTraitor, noting attackers converted assets primarily into ether. The FBI previously linked the same actors to a $1.5bn theft from Bybit in February 2025. Binance initially suspected a compromised employee laptop but later found additional breach points, with an ongoing investigation and detailed report planned.
