FBI links $6.3 billion Binance hack to North Korean hackers
The FBI has attributed the theft of $6.3 billion in digital assets from cryptocurrency exchange Binance on October 29, 2026, to North Korean state-sponsored hackers, identifying the activity as "TraderTraitor." The FBI stated it observed the hackers converting stolen assets into Ethereum and expects further laundering through decentralized finance and instant swap services. Binance suspended deposits and withdrawals during its investigation and has covered about 90% of the impacted amount, with withdrawals resuming in phases. TraderTraitor, linked to the Lazarus Group, has been associated with cryptocurrency thefts since at least 2020, targeting blockchain firms via spearphishing and malware. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng assured customers their assets are safe, with the company committed to covering all losses.
