FBI links $6 billion Binance crypto theft to North Korean hackers
The FBI confirmed Saturday that North Korean hackers stole over $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance this week, marking one of the largest digital asset thefts in history and the first federal confirmation of Pyongyang's role. The stolen funds were primarily converted into Ethereum. The FBI, with the Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigation, linked the attack to North Korean cyber activity dubbed "TraderTraitor." Authorities expect the assets to be laundered through decentralized finance platforms and instant exchange services, urging crypto firms to block transactions from linked wallet addresses. Binance said it replenished about 90% of the stolen assets, covering roughly $6 billion of the estimated $6.3 billion loss, and will absorb the financial impact. President Trump said his administration is still gathering information on the breach.
