FBI Blames North Korea for Record $6.36 Billion Binance Crypto Heist

spiegel.de (German) —

The FBI has officially attributed the largest cryptocurrency theft in history to North Korea, stating the isolated country's TraderTraitor hacker group was responsible for the multi-billion-dollar attack on Binance. The US federal police have called on companies to block transactions from specific addresses to prevent the laundering of stolen assets. The stolen amount exceeds six billion dollars, with TRM Labs reporting that attackers moved most of the 6.36 billion dollars within 20 minutes. Binance has stated it will cover 90 percent of the stolen sum through measures like buybacks, ensuring users are not financially impacted, with withdrawals expected to resume by Sunday. The attack began Thursday evening, with hackers emptying wallets containing Bitcoin, USDT, XRP, and SOL, likely gaining access through a compromised employee laptop. Binance has faced regulatory scrutiny and scandals, and its founder Changpeng Zhao was previously jailed but later pardoned by President Donald Trump.
