Binance to resume withdrawals after covering most of $6.3bn theft

dawn.com —

Binance will resume withdrawals on Sunday after covering 95 per cent of the $6.3 billion in tokens stolen in the world’s largest digital heist, which the FBI has attributed to a North Korean state-sponsored unit. The exchange said it used company funds to buy replacement tokens, covering $6 billion of the stolen assets, with the remaining 5 per cent being less liquid and harder to source. The FBI identified the responsible group as TraderTraitor, noting members converted stolen assets into ether and expected further laundering. The theft occurred in about 20 minutes late Thursday, bearing similarities to previous attacks blamed on North Korea, which has denied involvement. Binance has frozen about $3 billion of affected assets and committed to bearing the financial costs, using its Safu fund and corporate treasury to cover losses.
