FBI Blames North Korean Hackers for $6B Binance Theft

gazeta.ru (Russian) —

The FBI has attributed the theft of over $6 billion in cryptocurrency from the Binance exchange to the North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor. The agency stated the group is currently converting the stolen assets into other cryptocurrencies, primarily Ethereum. The FBI, along with the US Secret Service and the IRS Criminal Investigation division, published addresses of over 600 crypto wallets and urged industry participants to block transactions linked to these accounts. Binance estimated the damage at $6.3 billion, with about $3 billion in assets frozen. The exchange has suspended deposits and withdrawals and promised to cover all losses. The hacker reportedly gained access through a compromised engineer's laptop, and the stolen funds may be laundered via decentralized finance services and instant exchangers.
