FBI links Binance hack to North Korean hackers in record $1.5B theft
The FBI attributed the theft of billions of dollars from Binance, the largest crypto heist in history, to North Korean hackers on Saturday, identifying the attackers as the entity TraderTraitor. The bureau linked the attack to the same actors behind a $1.5 billion Bybit hack last year and requested crypto exchanges and analytics firms block transactions tied to specific addresses. Investigators found TraderTraitor is converting stolen assets primarily into ethereum and may use DeFi services to launder funds. President Donald Trump questioned the FBI's certainty, saying "we don't know if it's North Korea." Binance said it has reserves to cover 90% of the missing assets and will fully reimburse customers. Experts expect the hackers to break up and launder funds over months.
