Binance resumes bitcoin and ether withdrawals after $6.3 billion hack
Binance resumed bitcoin, ether, and some stablecoin withdrawals on Sunday after restoring 95% of the $6.3 billion in tokens stolen from its platform, with the FBI attributing the attack to North Korea. The exchange said it used its own funds to purchase replacement tokens, covering $6 billion of the losses, while the remaining 5% involves less liquid assets that may take longer to acquire. The FBI identified the TraderTraitor hacker group as responsible, noting the theft occurred in about 20 minutes and may be the largest financial heist in history. Binance pledged to absorb the full loss, drawing from reserves including its $1 billion SAFU fund and company cash. The attack involved a compromised laptop and malicious software, and analysts noted it follows a series of crypto thefts, with $2.9 billion stolen in nearly 150 attacks last year.
