FBI Blames North Korea for Record $6.3 Billion Binance Crypto Theft
The FBI accused North Korea on Saturday of orchestrating the $6.3 billion theft of digital currencies from cryptocurrency platform Binance, marking the largest such hack on record. US investigators identified the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor as responsible for Thursday's breach and observed the thieves converting stolen funds into Ether, the Ethereum network's cryptocurrency. The FBI released roughly 500 Ethereum addresses used for laundering and urged crypto platforms to block related transactions. The stolen amount is four times larger than the $1.5 billion TraderTraitor siphoned from ByBit in February 2025. The group is linked to Lazarus, affiliated with North Korean intelligence, which has used cybercrime to fund its sanctioned weapons programs. Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange with 335 million users, resumed withdrawals Sunday and said it had replenished 90% of the stolen assets.
