FBI Blames North Korea for Record $6 Billion Binance Crypto Theft
The FBI has attributed the theft of over $6 billion in virtual assets from cryptocurrency exchange Binance to North Korea, marking one of the largest crypto hacks ever. Binance has resumed withdrawals and pledged to cover all losses from the incident. Binance said it used company funds to buy tokens, replenishing 90% of the stolen assets, with the remaining 10% being less liquid and slower to source. The FBI identified a North Korea-affiliated group called TraderTraitor as responsible, noting it observed the actors converting stolen assets into Ethereum and expects further laundering. TraderTraitor is the same group blamed for a $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in February 2025 and is linked to the Lazarus Group. The hack caused major cryptocurrency prices to fall sharply, with Bitcoin dropping nearly 5% and Ethereum nearly 6%.
