Binance recovers 95% of $6.3B hack; FBI links North Korea
Binance has covered 95% of the $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency stolen in a major hack, restoring withdrawals within days. The FBI has linked North Korea to the attack, the largest digital heist ever recorded. The exchange used company funds to purchase digital assets and replace the stolen funds, covering $6 billion. The remaining 5% consists of less liquid assets that may take longer to replenish. Withdrawals for 15 cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and ether, resumed today. The FBI attributed the breach to the North Korean-backed hacker group TraderTraitor, which attempted to convert stolen funds into ethereum. The hack reportedly began via a compromised laptop belonging to a Binance engineer, granting unauthorized access to its systems.
