FBI Links $6.3 Billion Binance Hack to North Korean Group TraderTraitor

lalibre.be (French) —

The FBI formally accused North Korea on Saturday of orchestrating the theft of $6.3 billion in virtual assets from cryptocurrency exchange Binance, marking the largest such heist in history. The agency identified the North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor as responsible for the attack around October 29, 2026. The FBI stated the hackers are converting the stolen funds into Ether and laundering them through decentralized finance services and instant exchanges, publishing a list of about 500 Ethereum addresses for platforms to block. President Donald Trump expressed doubt about Pyongyang's involvement, while Binance said it has recovered 90% of the stolen amount and assured clients they will not suffer losses. The theft is four times larger than TraderTraitor's previous record haul of $1.5 billion from ByBit in February 2025. The group is linked to the Lazarus organization, affiliated with North Korea's intelligence services, and the cyberwarfare unit "Bureau 121" reportedly employs 6,000 operatives worldwide.
