Trump and Venezuela's interim leader meet at UN for first time

US President Donald Trump met with Venezuela's interim leader Delcy Rodriguez for the first time in person this week, discussing energy and security, she said. The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Rodriguez, the first Venezuelan head of state to visit since Nicolas Maduro's capture in a US raid in January, called the Tuesday meeting "historic" on X. They discussed strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation in energy, mining, and security, with US officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio attending. Rodriguez, formerly Maduro's vice president, has cooperated with Washington, including granting US access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves. Trump noted in his UN address that the two countries hold over 60 percent of the world's oil, adding "to the victor belong the spoils."
